Synopsis

FYTG Flyers present two pieces:

Antigone by Jean Anouilh,

and The What, Why & Where of Witches, a devised piece.

As the stories of women and men who were hunted down as witches are revealed and petitions for apologies to those killed are created across the UK, what does the word witch conjure for us today, why do ‘witch hunts’ still happen, and where is the idea of a witch settling in the contemporary climate? The group’s ideas will be presented in a short, devised piece, both mysterious and enlightening.

Jean Anouilh, one of the foremost French playwrights of the twentieth century wrote innovative drama rich in fantasy, tragic passion, scenic poetry and cosmic leaps in time and space. Antigone, his best-known play, was performed in 1944 in Nazi-controlled Paris and sparked fierce controversy. Anouilh cleverly uses this modern retelling of Sophocles’ myth to explore the disturbing moral dilemmas of our times. The language of this play is modern, and we have experimented with some ideas of our own for the presentation of two of the major characters. A timeless tragedy that helps us all see more clearly.
