The Holloway Presents...

Curated by The Holloway

Known for its offbeat programming and fierce DIY ethos, The Holloway — part grassroots venue, part folkloric bookshop — is curating a night of the weird and eerie in contemporary music for the Black Shuck Festival.

This specially curated evening draws on their love of outsider folk, drone, noise, and experimental ritualism — expect haunted textures, psychogeographic electronics, myth-soaked soundscapes and artists operating far outside the algorithm. For fans of the uncanny, the handmade, and the deeply atmospheric, this is a night not to miss.

MILKWEED

Possibly the most curious group in the currently burgeoning British folk re-revival, MILKWEED is an enigmatic duo making what they call “slacker-trad” — a genuinely strange brew of lo-fi sampling, traditional instrumentation and jarring cut-ups, stitched together with a strong flavour of folk horror and found sound.

Adored by The Quietus and praised across the UK music press, their latest album Remscéla (released by Broadside Hacks) is a haunting and expansive work rooted in the prelude tales of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, an Irish mythic epic. Drawing from Thomas Kinsella’s 1969 translation, they offer a radically interpretive, fragmentary, and reverent approach — folk music not defined by genre, but by method.

Expect something arcane, immersive and unlike anything else on the circuit.

FENLAND DRONE WORKSHOP

Improvisations and field recordings from the heart of the Fens, Fenland Drone Workshop is a haunting ambient project rooted in the sprawling marshes and ancient ruins of East Anglia.

Their soundscapes — part ritual, part sonic archaeology — are constructed from live improvisation in abandoned chapels and open fenland, captured in both analogue hum and digital fog.

SPLIT APEX

Split Apex are Jussi Palmusaari (guitar and drum machine) and Peter Blundell (voice and bass).

Together, they combine restless sonic textures, oddball phrasing within barely-contained song structures held together by moth-woven threads.

Formed in Autumn 2024, the project marks the first music-making for Palmusaari since leaving his native Finland where he played with the band, Preesens, in the late-90s/early-00s. For Blundell, Split Apex exists adjacent to Komare, his duo with Dominic Goodman (UEVPD) and follows the endeavours of his previous band, Mosquitoes.

THE BREEDLING

Emerging from the murky swamps and folklore-haunted fenlands, The Breedling is Chris Spalton’s sonic alter ego—a solo project steeped in industrial folk horror, doom laced drones, and ritualistic noise.

What began two years ago with the release of his first track “Betrayer” has evolved into a haunting discography, including Irukandji (2023) and the recentDetritus (2024). Irukandji channels the dark, defiant spirit of a restless marsh tribe, delivering raw drones, heavy discord, and atmospheric weight that conjure images of “lost in a miserable marsh”

THE FEATHERED THORNS

“A spectral fog of acoustic authenticity and jarring electronic interference. Bungay is the new Seattle.” Stewart Lee

Songs of of Folklore fantasy, domestic truth and filmic dream scenes, featuring imaginary characters depicted in states ranging from desperate fragility to sharp toothed menace, against a backdrop of lonely country lanes, haunted houses and threadbare, seaside hotel rooms.

With their perceptive balance of tender and grit, the songs are startling and emotive in their atmosphere and drama, producing an authentic raw tonal palette over a haunting collage of lo- fi soundscapes, created using voices, guitar, piano and sampled sounds.
