Welcome to Ben Blyth

Fisher Centre Manager

The Trustees are delighted to announce that yesterday, August 16th, they welcomed Ben Blyth to the Fisher Thetare as the Fisher Centre Manager.

Ben grew up in rural Lincolnshire, but has 300 years of family history in Bungay so, in many ways, he feels that “moving to the area feels like a second homecoming.”

Ben writes: “my first experiences in theatre were at the tiny Broadbent Theatre in Wickenby, where I stood on stage and ate a carrot in a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor at the tender age of eleven. The carrots may have gone but the love of both Shakespeare and theatre remained, as I went on from Lincoln to read early modern history at Christ's College, Cambridge.”

While at Cambridge, Ben found himself in the theatre rather than the library far too often, acting and directing in over thirty productions during his four years at the university. Following graduation, he took an MA in Theatre at RADA and has spent the last ten years touring the world with his internationally acclaimed Shakespeare Company, Malachite Theatre. Ben has just put the finishing touched to a PhD in Shakespeare Studies with the University of Calgary in Canada, where his research sheds new light on the performance conditions of Shakespeare's early plays in Shoreditch, East London.

While his theatrical work has taken him around the world, Ben has always dreamed of managing a theatre here at home. He is delighted to be moving to the area with his wife Danielle and “...contributing to this exciting arts community.” He is particularly looking forward to meeting everyone and listening to your ideas for the theatre's future, asking how can the Fisher best represent your community? And how can we best serve you?

Ben also says to look out for some exciting new programming coming to the Fisher, including home-grown and touring productions, stand-up comedy, bands, talks, film nights, special seasonal events and more... watch the website!
