Folk Festival Workshop - Putting Ballads to Music

The Bell Gallery, Saturday 7 Sep 2024, 13:00  - ends at 14:00

Venue: The Bell Gallery, Earsham Street, NR35 1AQ

Host: Douglas Bence

Douglas will introduce the ballad, its history and the various ways in which it has been used through the ages.

Examples will be read out and include extracts from Charles Causley, Oscar Wilde's Ballad of Reading Jail and Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

This leads into Charles Causley’s Ballad for Katherine of Aragon which was put to music by Martin Simpson.

You don’t need to bring an instrument.

The idea is to show what’s possible so that you can go away, pick your own story, write a ballad and set it to music.

Free entry, but booking required.
